D’Bone Collector Museum – Davao City

When was the last time you visited a museum? For a lot of us, we cannot recall our last one; and for some, they have not visited even just one.

Back when I was still in college, I have always wanted to visit a bone museum located just downtown Davao. Due to my ever-changing schedule, I never got a chance. It was just this month (more than a year after my graduation) that I finally got to pay a visit.

D’Bone Collector Museum Inc. is one of the largest bone collections in the Philippines, and the only one of its type in Mindanao. It is a three-storey museum run by Darrell Blatchley, an American collector living in Davao City. It is home to 3,000 bones, all in one roof.

Some of the skeletons were acquired by Darrell himself starting when he was still a kid; and the rest were donated by different organizations around the globe. Terrestrial, aquatic, and aerial species — the museum has various of each displayed.

Museums serve as educational centers. They are good extensions of the schools. The things that people learn from their visit likely to retain longer because of their physical experience / exposure.

I hope that more of different types open across the country. And I also hope that people give great amount of support for these places as the people behind them exerted so much effort just to put them up.

It was sad that Darrell was not present when I visited. I think that he is an interesting person, and has so much that he can share to the visitors. Maybe next time. I am positive that D’Bone Collector Museum Inc. will continue to grow size and value-wise.

D’Bone Collector Museum Inc. is located at San Pedro Exit, Barangay 76-A, Davao City. It is better to take a jeepney or taxi, drop off at the nearest stop, and take a sikad than to bring your own ride as the road leading there is slim and crowded.

The entrance fee is 80 PHP per head for adults and 70 PHP for kids. The fee is inclusive of full tour of the place with one tour guide.

The museum is open from Mondays to Fridays, 10 AM – 5 PM; and on Saturdays, 1 PM – 5 PM.
